Our core programme areas:

surf camps

surf therapy

Youth Ocean Summit

We are flexible and each year we try new projects and work with different partners while keeping our foundation of the 3 programme areas.

SURF CAMPS & DAY TRIPS

Our camps typically take place in Kent and span three days and two nights. Participants enjoy two full days of surfing, along with beach activities and educational workshops. Evenings are filled with bushcraft dinners, night walks, and camp games at our private campsite.

We have previously collaborated with schools in Tower Hamlets and Lewisham, but we are open to partnering with any organization or school for future surf camps.

GET OUT supplies all necessary surfing equipment, instructors, tents, sleeping bags, and air beds. We are flexible with itineraries and work closely with our partners to customize each camp to best suit the needs of the participants.

In instances when we are unable to hold a camp or upon partner request, we offer surf day trips. These excursions include half-day surfing sessions as well as beach activities and workshops focused on ocean literacy, safety, and environmental education.

SURF THERAPY

At GET OUT we understand that young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, are not accessing green and blue space, becoming more disconnected from the natural world and less engaged with its protection. All of which have a direct effect on health and well-being.

There is a growing body of evidence linking access to green (and blue) spaces with physical and mental health. This has included “social prescribing” as a preventative measure in tackling mental health and subsequently physical health. The NHS has referenced surfing as an example of such social prescribing to reverse the worrying trends in young people’s health.

We are confident that through our experience of taking over 350 children and young people surfing from Tower Hamlets and existing NHS data, we can help alleviate the negative trends associated with mental and physical health among young people in the borough. We can achieve this through surfing and water-based activities, inspiring the participants in this programme to have the confidence to continue using physical activity to promote good health.

Our surf programme also ensures participants have greater confidence and self-esteem, are more willing to try new things and be more active within their communities. The programme also involves educational workshops on environmental issues and water safety allowing young people to feel more empowered and engaged with their natural world and its protection

YOUTH OCEAN SUMMIT

At GET OUT, we firmly believe that the Youth Ocean Summit is a vital initiative for fostering genuine engagement among young people. In our rapidly changing world, empowering youth to connect with nature and grasp the significance of environmental stewardship has never been more crucial. We are proud to have partnered with Plastic Free North Devon in our inaugural Summit in September 2024 to provide a platform that amplifies young voices, allowing them to share their ideas, challenges, and innovative solutions for engaging with the natural world.

By facilitating open dialogue and collaboration, we can nurture a generation that is not only more attuned to their environment but also deeply passionate about protecting it. Our commitment at GET OUT focuses on ensuring that young people have the necessary opportunities and resources to thrive in nature, ultimately building a sustainable future for everyone.

Summit Mission & Objectives

We understand the essential need for “meaningful engagement” rather than mere “surface-level engagement” in achieving our charity's core mission. Our primary objectives include:

1. Increasing Access: We aim to enhance opportunities for young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds in urban areas who currently lack access to green and blue spaces.

2. Improving Well-Being: By fostering a stronger connection to nature, we seek to address the negative impacts that limited access to nature can have on mental and physical health.

3. Inspiring Future Leaders: We recognize that today’s youth are increasingly disconnected from the natural world and less involved in its protection. We are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders.

The difference between meaningful and surface-level engagement lies in providing young people with the opportunities, space, and support needed to transform potential into action. Passive audience participation without meaningful interaction often stifles creativity and expression.
